MP3s Are Coming Soon! We Are In The Studio!

Meanwhile, Check Out These MP3s From The CG Archive featuring our former vocalist Jessica Robinson.
Evenflow (orig. by Pearl Jam) - Recorded LIVE at Idols in Palatine, Nov. 2006
Scratches (© 2006) - One Of Our Original Songs written by Ron Wilcox, Ninos George and Jessica Robinson. Scratches appears in the soundtrack for the film, Valley Of Angels.

Special Note From Ron: Scratches is growing quite a history!
So much so that I thought I'd share the complete and unlikely...
      ...History Of Scratches
Where to begin? At the beginning! When I wrote the main riff, I thought that it had some potential as a "hook", although I wondered if it was a little too moody and somber and wasn't sure if I wanted to work on it. But I decided to try a quick build-up to a point of higher drama by first introducing an element of tension in a pre-chorus which would quickly build up and bridge the gap between the moodier verse and - what else? - a big, slammin power-chorus - and then back through this dynamic cycle again. It fell together very quickly and it worked fairly well (I thought), and it all added up to a pretty original sounding, cohesive, muscular crescendo of a rock riff. Each part of the song complements the previous and leads the listener to the next.
I liked it and couldn't wait to play it for the rest of the band to see what they thought. Ninos liked it right away and contributed some very cool rhythmic accents that worked just right and put the finishing touches on it. I was not sure whether Jess cared much for this song when I first came up with it but I gave her a rough instrumental CD to bring with on a long plane ride and there, alone with her thoughts she came up with something that worked pretty well with the (admittedly) complex main riff and the evolving dynamics of the arrangement provided for her. Then after only a few live performances, the song was relegated to the scrap heap. Jess didn't want to play it live. Although the rest of us did want to play it and our fans certainly wanted to hear it, it seemed as if it wasn't to be.
Not long after this, a Los Angeles based writer/director named Jon Rosten was doing post-production on his new film "Valley Of Angels" (2006) and he needed music for the soundtrack. Ninos' sister, Rene George, who starred in the film, presented the same rough instrumental version of Scratches (the one I gave to Jessica) to Jon. He liked it and wanted to use this instrumental version of Scratches for Valley Of Angels. I needed to copyright the composition before sending it to Jon, so Ninos and I laid down the instrumental tracks for the film and while mixing the tracks, I had the idea to invite Jess over to lay down a vocal line so we could copyright a second (vocal) version as well as an instrumental version. Why not? The instrumental tracks were already finished and I suggested that if anything, it was a good opportunity for her to have her name on a copyright. I advised her that it's always in one's best interest to copyright what one writes - even if you don't care for it. After a little convincing, she agreed. So the song (instrumental version) ended up in the film and I felt like a proud papa!
Fast forward a couple of years and Jess's new band High Gloss Black is now... "covering" the song. Irony of ironies - an original band is covering a song written by a cover band.
So that's the complete and unlikely history of Scratches except for why H.G.B. is covering it. Perhaps Scratches finally grew on Jessica or maybe her new band mates just like it a lot. Who knows? To the guys of H.G.B. - an admirable effort covering the riffs guys! I am flattered and feel kinda like a proud papa all over again! And just let me know if you need any more material... there's more where that (Scratches) came from! The real fun will begin if we have to discuss publishing!
